A brief history of Masaya Volcano

Masaya is a volcanic complex with several craters rather than one simple cone. Repeated eruptions and collapses have shaped its landscape over thousands of years, leaving layers of lava and ash across the surrounding caldera, a broad volcanic depression.

Written accounts reach back to the early Spanish colonial period. The chronicler Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo climbed the volcano in 1529 and described its lava lake. Those accounts are part of a long record of observations of Masaya.

One major eruption began in March 1772. Lava escaped from a fissure on the side of the Masaya cone and spread across the surrounding land. Parts of the flow reached Lake Masaya, while another branch travelled north towards Lake Managua.

Santiago crater began forming in 1853 and expanded during activity in 1858 and 1859. It later became the focus of much of Masaya’s observed volcanic activity. In 1979, the area became Nicaragua’s first national park, protecting a landscape shaped by centuries of eruptions.

What makes a visit special?

The scale of the crater is hard to appreciate until you see it. Layers of rock line its walls, while the surrounding lava fields show how past eruptions changed the landscape. The cross on the nearby hill is another familiar landmark associated with Masaya’s colonial history.

Masaya has had periods with a visible lava lake, but lava visibility is not guaranteed. Gas, weather, volcanic activity and park restrictions can affect what visitors see and which areas they can access.
